FC United win at Hebburn to book place in FA Trophy first round proper
FC United are through to the first round proper of the Isuzu FA Trophy after a stunning 3-0 victory at highflying Hebburn Town on Saturday afternoon.
All three goals came in the first half as the Reds blew away their hosts in empathic style. It took less than 25 seconds for last Saturday’s hat-trick hero, Jordan Buckley, to open the scoring with a 30-yard lob.
A spectacular bicycle-kick from Adam Le Fondre doubled the lead on 27 minutes before Buckley blasted home the third 10 minutes before halftime to complete the scoring.
The Hornets, who are currently third in the Pitching In Northern Premier League, were considered favourites by many before the match. However, FC United’s ‘new manager bounce’ continued under Mark Beesley with another clinical performance giving him his second win in his first two games.
The hosts had the lion’s share of possession – 73% to 27% – but they only registered one shot on target in the first half, which goalkeeper Charlie Casper saved comfortably. The whole United team pressed and worked hard off the ball, whilst centre-backs Declan Evans and Jan Palinkas marshalled the backline well to nullify the threat of Hebburn’s captain and talisman Amar Purewal.
At the other end, United had three shots on target in the first half and scored three goals. Buckley appears to be in the form of his life and stunned everyone with another superb strike. Le Fondre then got in on the act. Charlie Ennis’ free-kick from the edge of the box was deflected up into the air and Le Fondre acrobatically fired the ball home for 2-0.
Moments later, Le Fondre turned provider as he raced away down the right wing and squared the ball into the six-yard box for Buckley to slam past on loan Sunderland goalkeeper Adam Richardson to make it 3-0.
Into the second half and United could have extended their lead. Buckley looked destined to bag his second hat-trick in eight days but was denied one-on-one by Richardson’s legs. Moments later, Le Fondre saw a back post diving header from an Ennis corner comfortably saved.
Sensing time was running out, Hebburn changed their approach, swapping patient build up play for the long ball game. Although the change in tact caused United slightly more problems – Casper made a superb close-range stop with his legs and Hebburn rattled the crossbar late on – the Reds stood firm and will be delighted with a cleansheet.
With the three-goal cushion, United were afforded the luxury of giving brief debuts from the bench for teenagers Dallas Omuruyi and Charlie Cowin. Omuruyi nearly scored with his first touch but was denied by Richardson.
It was a fantastic and unfamiliar performance from United, as rather than dominating the game, they soaked up the pressure and punished Hebburn when it mattered. Beesley’s boys will find out their next round opponents in the draw on Monday lunchtime.
